The South African System Dynamics Chapter is deeply saddened by the unexpected loss of a truly fantastic young leader, Mr. Naledi Memela, who contributed significantly to the growth of system dynamics within Eskom as well as to the national and international system dynamics fraternies.
Naledi held a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and was undertaking an MSc in Chemical Engineering through WITS University. Naledi was first introduced to System Dynamics in 2013 and officially joined the System Dynamics Centre of Expertise, under Eskom Research Testing & Development, in 2015. He has since submitted and presented numerous papers at the local South African System Dynamics conference as well as an international publication which he presented at the International System Dynamics Conference in Reykjavik, Iceland. Naledi has applied the system dynamics methodology for the development of operational and strategic decision support tools for various areas within Eskom. Naledi has years of experience in facilitating introductory and advanced Systems Dynamics courses to various academic institutions and industry stakeholders.
Naledi obtained his professional engineering status in September 2020 and at the time of his death, had been appointed as the (acting) Manager of the Eskom System Dynamics Centre of Expertise. A list of some of his technical publications is summarized below:
Memela, N., 2015. Simulating Eskom’s Value Chain Key Performance Indicators using System Dynamics, Johannesburg: 3rd South African System Dynamics Conference, Johannesburg, South Africa.
Memela, N., 2018. An Expansion of the Long Term Impact of Renewable Wind Technology Implementation in South Africa, Reykjavik, Iceland: 36th International System Dynamics Conference , Johannesburg, South Africa.
Memela, N., 2019. Integration of System Dynamics Simulation and Process Control Modelling: Case Study Desalination Water Treatment Plant Modelling. 7th South African System Dynamics Conference, Stellenbosch, South Africa.
Memela, N., 2018. Investigation into the changes in Eskom coal generation fleet water requirements due to plant decommissioning: 6th South African System Dynamics Conference, Johannesburg, South Africa. We bid farewell to a young man who excelled in all facets of his life and who was the perfect role model for all other engineers and young leaders. He will always be remembered for the immense impact he had on the system dynamics team at Eskom and the South African System Dynamics Chapter.
