Seminar 2 – 11 June 2025 @18h00 (UTC +02:00)

Venue: Online

Topic: Systems thinking and modelling from local to international research

The presentation will cover lessons from applying SD modelling and participatory process across different EU and international projects. I will share my own insights from developing and implementing projects in Sweden, including highlights and challenges – both academic and interpersonal.

Presenter: Dr Shane Carnohan

Shane Alan Carnohan has been a Researcher at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden since 2021. He brings experience from previous roles at DTU – Technical University of Denmark, DynaMundo, William D. Ruckelshaus Center, and USAID & Association for Water and Rural Development. He holds a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). As a participatory process expert and system dynamicist, he aims to help bridge the gap between science and society to enable sustainable policy development. His primary interest is investigating how methods of facilitating group processes, supported by powerful simulation tools, can be more effective at improving the cooperation among actors in complex socio-environmental systems.

Seminar 1 – 19 March 2025 @18h00 (UTC +02:00)

Venue: Online – COMPLETE

Topic: Seeing in Systems

This presentation is based on excerpts from my soon-to-be-published book by the same title. The presentation assumes knowledge of certain basics about systems including what a system is and is not. This includes knowledge about reinforcing and balancing loops, and delays. Principles of systems thinking are covered followed by discussions of the most common systems archetypes. Although causal loop diagrams are presented, the explanation is beyond the scope of this presentation. However, real life examples are given to help participants “see in systems”, thus taking Systems Thinking from academia or Business schools to the real world.

Presenter: Dr Pearson Sibanda

Dr Pearson Sibanda is a serial entrepreneur who was, until 2017, an electrical engineering consultant with a company he co-founded in 2001 after some considerable time in the corporate world. Currently, Pearson is an independent Business and Management Consultant who provides business advisory services focusing on Strategic Leadership and System Thinking. He also provides expert advice on business expansion into the rest of the African continent. Pearson’s latest assignment was as a Technical Lea/Lead Writer for the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) on their mission to South Sudan. Before that he had done assignments for IFA and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as Business and Enterprise Development Expert, value Chain development Expert, and Fisheries Economist in Eritrea, Mozambique and in South Africa. He has given lectures on Entrepreneurship, and Systems Thinking at various Business Schools whenever time has allowed. He presented a paper on “The natural resources curse” at the conference on sustainable development held at the University of Michigan in 2019.

Seminar 3 – 17 September 2025 @18h00 (UTC +02:00)

Venue: Online

Topic: “Using Systems to Facilitate Change and Avoid Resistance”

A system is a group of elements that have all agreed to the same rules. For change to occur – change management, decision making, learning, habit change – the underlying system must be engaged. Too often we ignore systems and approach modification through behavior change, ending up with resistance as the underlying system thinks it’s at risk. This session will explain the systemic elements that must be included in all change, and the steps to accomplish resistance-free change.

Presenter: Sharon-Drew Morgen

Sharon-Drew Morgen is an original thinker and inventor of systemic change models for Leadership, OD, Sales, Healthcare, and Coaching. She is a coach and trainer, and the author of 10 books, including a New York Times Business Bestseller.
